Can You Wash Your Wig?

Just like regular hair, wigs must be washed to keep it looking its best.

If you have a synthetic wig, it’s best to use shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for wigs. Wigs don’t have the natural oils our scalp produces to keep it shiny and lustrous, and regular shampoo and conditioner can strip it of its luster.

If you have a natural human hair wig, you may use your regular shampoo and conditioner. However, it’s still best to use specially formulated wig shampoo and conditioner for best results.

What’s The Best Way to Wash a Natural Human Hair Wig?

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to wash a natural human hair wig.

Prepare Your Wig

First, prepare your wig by smoothing it out and, using a wide-tooth comb, gently remove knots and tangles. Take care not to pull or stretch the wig cap so it doesn’t lose its shape or style.

Wet Your Wig

If you have a human hair wig, pour lukewarm water over the wig to wet it. It is not necessary to soak it.
The best advice we have on how to wash a synthetic wig is to fill a basin with cold water, add a capful of wig shampoo and swish the wig in the water to sufficiently saturate it in the soapy water. Let the wig soak for a few minutes.

Begin Washing Your Wig

For human hair wigs, hold the wig in one hand and, using your other hand, lather a small amount of shampoo (you may use regular shampoo if you don’t have wig shampoo) and work it gently through the wig. Rinse to remove the shampoo, and take care not to wring or squeeze the wig.

If you have a synthetic hair wig, once it has soaked in the soapy water for a few minutes, empty the basin and replace it with clean water. Then, swish the wig in the clean water till all the shampoo is gone.

Condition Your Wig

For human hair wigs, use a small amount of conditioner (you may use regular conditioner if you don’t have a wig conditioner) and work gently through the hair. Take care not to rub or squeeze the hair fibres. Leave the conditioner on for a few minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.

If you have a synthetic hair wig, fill the basin with clean, cold water, add a capful of wig conditioner in the water, and soak the wig for a few minutes. Empty the basin, fill it with clean water and swish the wig until the conditioner is gone.

Air Dry Your Wig

Gently blot your wig with a towel, taking care not to rub or wring the hair fibres as this will form knots. Place on a wig stand or leave on a towel to dry. Air drying is best. If you have a human hair wig, you may use a hair dryer on a low setting. Never use a hair dryer on synthetic hair wigs, as it will melt the fibres.

How Often Should I Wash My Wig?

How often you should wash your wig depends on how often you wear it. As a rule of thumb:

  • If the wig starts to lose its lustre, or
  • It starts to become misshapen due to product build-up or
  • Odours start to develop,

Then, it’s time to wash your wig. Don’t wash it more than once a week to keep its shape and shine.

What’s the Best Way To Put On a Wig?

Here is a step-by-step best practice guide on how to put on a wig correctly.

If you wear glasses, take them off before you begin

Taking off your glasses before you start means you can fit your wig more comfortably. The best way to wear a wig is by having it lay as naturally as possible, so don’t worry if some hairs are out of place. You may use headbands or wig huggers to help the wig sit comfortably.

Check your wig to be sure the label is on the back

Just as you don’t want your shirt to be worn back to front, the same goes for wigs. The label should always be in the back for the best fit.

Put on your wig by sliding it from front to back

The best technique on how to wear a wig is by sliding it from front to back. This ensures the wig lines up with your hairline for natural-looking results.

Best Practices to Maintain Healthy Human Hair Wigs

Just like natural hair, human hair wigs require the right products to keep it healthy. Here are our best tips on how to maintain human hair wigs.

Storing Your Wig

Remember to comb and remove tangles before storing your wig. The best way to store your wig is by keeping it on a Styrofoam head or wig stand. This will help to keep the wig’s shape and prevent the hair fibres from becoming tangled for when you next wear it.

Minimise Heat Applied To The Wig To Avoid Damage

The number one tip on how to style a wig, particularly synthetic hair wigs, is to keep it away from heat, such as hair dryers or hair irons. Heat can dry out and damage synthetic wigs.
You can use heat when styling human hair wigs just as you can with natural human hair. For best results, use Thermal Spray exclusive to Transitions Hair to protect your hair from heat and keep it looking good for longer.
