According to economics professor at the University of Texas-Austin, attractive people enjoy advantages in hiring and earning. Economist Daniel Hamermesh has devoted almost 20 years to the study of physical beauty and how it affects employment and earning potential. In his book, Beauty Pays: Why Attractive People Are More Successful, he claims that beauty brings many benefits, including a bigger pay check.
Through his extensive research, Hamermesh has found that below-average-looking men earn 17% less than those considered good-looking, while below-average-looking females earn 12% less than their attractive counterparts.
Over the span of a career, these earning inequalities mean that good-looking workers could earn a total of US$230,000 (A$225,535) more than those with below-average looks. These figures were based on an average salary of US$20 (A$19.6) an hour in 2010.
Hamermesh asserts that beautiful people are more likely to be happier, earn more money, and marry a good-looking and highly educated spouse. Apparently attractive people find it easier to get bank loans with lower interest rates and are generally more productive at work, which leads to higher sales and potentially higher profit.
In his chapter on earnings, he provides some other thought-provoking observations about the relationship between beauty, self-esteem, intelligence and earning power. Do good looks make people more confident and thus more desirable, boosting their wages? A Canadian study showed a correlation between looks and self-esteem but only a slight one, Hamermesh writes. In a roundabout way, Hamermesh ends on a hopeful note for those not gifted with good looks, writing that bad looks are not “a crucial disadvantage. . . whose burden should be so overwhelming as to crush our spirit.”
