What Causes Male Hair Thinning?

Male hair thinning often stems from a combination of factors. Key contributors include:

  • Genetics (inherited predisposition)
  • Hormonal changes or imbalances
  • Poor nutrition
  • Stress

Recognising these factors and addressing the root cause/s of hair loss is key in developing targeted treatment for men’s hair thinning and restoring hair health.

Laser Hair Retention Therapy

Harnessing advanced technology, laser hair retention therapy uses low-level laser light to stimulate hair follicles, promoting growth and thickness. Short, painless sessions make it a convenient choice for most men, with noticeable results often within weeks. Explore the potential of laser hair therapy.

Hair Transplants

A hair transplant involves surgically removing healthy hair follicles from a donor site (typically the back or sides of the scalp) and implanting them into areas with thinning or balding hair. This procedure effectively restores natural-looking hair growth, with permanent results. Learn more about hair transplants for men.

Other Causes of Hair Loss

Stress

Can also trigger hair loss and cause thinning hair. Stress related hair loss might be reversed by elimination of stress factors. Furthermore, stress can increase the speed of hair loss in people who have a genetic predisposition to thinning hair and male or female pattern baldness. Severe stress, such as the loss of a loved one, severe illness or major surgery, may also lead to hair loss. In addition, anxiety habits, such as hair pulling or scalp rubbing, damages hair follicles. Often, when a person begins to use one of our hair restoration, hair replacement or baldness treatments, their stress levels rapidly decrease because they feel more in control of their lives and more confident in themselves.

Prescription drugs

Chemo and radiation therapies, and diseases can cause thinning hair and complete hair loss. Burns can permanently and deeply damage the exposed skin, causing baldness. Excessive intake of iron or vitamin A becomes toxic to the body and can lead to hair loss. Some illnesses may lead to thinning hair, such as thyroid disease (overactive or under active thyroid gland), ringworm, syphilis, and even high fever. Usually hair regrowth will take place after terminating the medical treatment or overcoming the illness. Always check with your doctor first if thinning hair or hair loss is symptomatic of the illness.

Inadequate diet

Such as crash dieting or insufficient protein in a person’s diet is another cause of thinning hair. Iron deficiency may also occur and cause thinning hair. The body’s protective mechanism will save internal protein by shifting hair into the resting phase. Hair loss will occur two to three months later. Usually new hair growth will be seen again if the person goes back to a healthy diet with adequate amounts of protein.

Alopecia areata

Is an illness where half an inch or larger patches of hair fall out in clumps to cause bald spots, and at times progresses to complete hair loss. Men, women and children may experience alopecia areata at any time in their lives. Some start losing hair with bald spots in certain areas and others with thinning hair all over. While there is no agreement on the causes of alopecia areata, most doctors believe that the body’s autoimmune system attacks its own hair follicles, causing hair loss. Alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis are extreme cases of this condition. Alopecia totalis is the total hair loss of the scalp. Alopecia universalis is total hair loss of all body hair. Hair regrowth usually is seen within 6 months, but if there is no hair regrowth within a year, then it is unlikely that any hair will ever come back. Transitions Hair has specialised treatments for baldness of this kind. See below for further information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best men's hair loss treatment?

The best men's hair loss treatment depends on the cause, severity, and pattern of your hair loss. Treatment options may include medication, PRP therapy, or a hair transplant. After a professional assessment, your specialist can recommend a personalised treatment plan to help achieve natural-looking, long-lasting results.

What is the most effective hair loss solution for men?

The most effective hair loss solution for men varies from person to person. Early hair loss may respond well to non-surgical treatments, while more advanced hair loss may require a hair transplant. A consultation will help determine the right solution based on your individual needs and goals.

How does male hair loss treatment work?

Male hair loss treatment works by addressing the underlying cause of hair loss while helping to slow further thinning and encourage healthier hair growth. Depending on your condition, treatment may involve medication, PRP therapy, or a hair transplant to restore hair density and confidence.

What are the first signs of hair loss in men?

The first signs of hair loss often include a receding hairline, thinning around the crown, excessive hair shedding, or reduced hair density. Recognising these symptoms early allows you to explore treatment options before hair loss becomes more advanced.

How long does it take to see hair restoration results?

Hair restoration results vary depending on the treatment you choose. Non-surgical treatments usually require several months before noticeable improvements appear, while hair transplant results develop gradually as transplanted hair grows naturally over time.
