Alopecia Areata is generally understood to be an autoimmune problem, when the body’s immune system begins attacking some of the cells in the skin or hair causing baldness. People who experience Alopecia Areata usually have a genetic predisposition for the problem. Usually it is triggered by an aberrant immune response. This could be anything from a viral or bacterial infection, a vaccination, stress, or trauma to the skin, to exposure to a foreign substance not usually encountered.

Some leading researchers in Australia are developing a new theory about the cause of Alopecia Areata. They feel that everyone may have a tendency towards Alopecia Areata, but the condition is triggered only when various genetic or environmental factors occur simultaneously. Trichotillomania is a known obsessive-compulsive disorder, which involves the pulling out of one’s own hair. This condition is usually seen in pre-teen and teenage girls and is often unconscious to the individual. This type of hair loss can affect women of all ages. To properly diagnose this condition, a biopsy can be performed by a competent dermatologist through microscopic analysis of the ends of the short hairs; the ends of the new hairs are pointed whereas broken hairs have uneven ends.

Hair follicles are remarkably resilient and it would take years of pulling for permanent damage to occur, although if repeated pulling continues, permanent loss of hair may result. Trichotillomania can appear as Alopecia Areata and is, in fact, often misdiagnosed as such. New medications and treatments are available for the condition.
